As it’s the weekend I thought I’d share a little round up of some (mostly) good shark and oceans news this week that has caught our attention.

Firstly, here in South Africa, the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board (KZNSB) is going to be testing an electronic shark repellent cable at a beach local to us called Glencairn. The testing of this cable will begin in October 2015 and it is hoped it will provide a barrier between sharks and humans that reduces the chance of a shark attack whilst not harming sharks in any way. If successful, this cable could provide a great alternative to the nets and drumlins currently deployed along the KZN coast. These nets and drumlins, in place each year, kill a number of sharks and other marine wildlife species. It is high time they were replaced and we hope this trial goes well. There has been a lot of press coverage regarding the UN Climate Summit this week and it has been interesting to read both the positive and negative news. I was very disappointed to read that the ocean is mostly absent from the programme at the summit (full article here) and yet inspired by Leonardo DiCaprio’s speech. Take your pick of which you prefer to view….go for the speech!

Talking of positives, have you seen the IUCN Love Not Loss campaign? This is an absolutely fantastic idea and more details of how we can all get involved are here. It is definitely one to check out this weekend and be inspired by. It is certainly at the core of our work and one we intend to follow.

Finally, another piece of positive news is that Obama is using his powers to create the world’s largest protected marine reserve in the Pacific Ocean. A super piece of news and the full article is here.
